2020 Baseball Season - May 1 2020

May 1, 2020

Good Afternoon,

I would like to provide all associations with an update as to the status of the 2020 Baseball Season.

On Thursday, April 30th, Sport NB and the Sport and Recreation Branch of the Provincial Government organized a conference call.

Baseball NB was one of five sports on the call along with eight multi-sport organizations. The purpose of the call was to express the importance of sport and recreation in the physical and social well-being of New Brunswick residents during this pandemic. Sport and recreation can help our province through these difficult times, as well as help us return to a new normal.  Decisions made now regarding sports and recreation will have lasting impacts on the mental and physical health of our citizens for many years in the future, especially our youth.

There was an interest in evaluating a return-to-play protocol for summer activities. A national, multisport, return-to-play protocol is currently being developed and once this is released the provincial government will have a template to work from.

In the meantime, Baseball NB has already started creating a sport-specific return-to-play policy that would outline all requirements for our sport to safely return this summer. These procedures will include, but are not limited to; social distancing requirements, sanitation procedures, rule adaptations, and seasonal structure.

Please know that we are exploring any and all options that will allow us to offer baseball in our province this year. We are being creative and flexible in order to adhere to all government and insurance stipulations. These measures could have major impacts to a typical practice, game, and seasonal structure. As a provincial organization we are approaching this situation with an open mind and we appreciate the support of the leagues, teams, and minor baseball associations throughout this process.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or recommendations.

Regards,

Nick Boudreau
