Jesse Barfield History in Major League Baseball

jesse-barfield-portrait-166Barfield had by far the best outfield arm of the 1980s. He led American League outfielders in assists three times (1985–87). Along with George Bell (LF) and Lloyd Moseby (CF), Barfield starred in what many analysts considered the best all-around outfield of the 1980s.

Selected by the Blue Jays in the ninth round of the 1977 amateur draft, Barfield debuted in the majors in 1981 and was a regular the following season. In 1985, he helped Toronto reach the playoffs for the first time. He also topped 20 home runs six times, became the first Blue Jay to hit a pinch grand slam (1982), and the first to hit 20 homers and steal 20 bases in the same season (1985).

Despite the Blue Jays' failure to defend their division title from the previous year, Barfield enjoyed his best personal season in 1986. He collected career-highs in batting average (.289), RBI (108), runs (107), hits (170) and doubles (35). He also hit a career-best 40 home runs, leading the major leagues and setting a team record which lasted one year. In addition, Barfield was awarded the Gold Glove Award and selected to the American League All-Star team.  Fredericton Minor Baseball welcomes Jesse to our Royals Baseball Camp and look forward to having a great week.

Big Brother returns for 2013 Baseball Camp - speed and agility training

dwighthornibrookhs11Coach Dwight Hornibrook (brother of Camp director Paul) has agreed to join in again for 2013 and for a second year lead the camp as the speed, agility and conditioning coach.  Coach Hornibrook who is a certified NCCP level 5 coach and is a graduate of the National Coaching institute will spend each day of camp showing and training each player important aspects of conditioning, speed and agility that will improve the level of play of each camper.  Dwight grew up in Fredericton and graduated from FHS and UNB before leaving the region to pursue his professional coaching career.  He was a member of the national champion UNB Red Shirts soccer team that captured UNB's first national title back in 1980.  He had been the Head Coach of Cortland State soccer team for eight years and took his team to the NCAA Division III state championship the last two years and won the title in 2008.  Coach Dwight also was head coach of the CSL Winnipeg Fury and was part of the World Cup U18 National Team Coaching staff.  Dwight is now working at Houghton College in upstate NY and also is assistant coach with Cornell University.  His wife Donna is currently the head coach of the Cornell's women's field hockey team.  FMBA is pleased Dwight has accepted the invitation to join in on the camp again and look forward to having a great week of instruction from him.

Camp Director Using Personal Experience to help Kids

1985 Marysville Royals Atlantic Champs in MarysvilleCamp Director Paul Hornibrook is no stranger to Baseball Camp. Growing up in Fredericton he remembers the days of the Marysville Royals Baseball Camps and how much wanted to play Senior Baseball and believed by going to camp it would help him reach that dream.  In fact, not only did he play senior baseball in the mid-eighties through the early 90's he also was a member of the 1985 Canada Games team and in 1983 and 1984 was part of the National Youth Team program and played for National Team coach and then Expos Scout Bill MacKenzie, who ultimately scouted Matt Stairs in 1987.  "I remember going to the Nationals in 1985 with the Marysville Royals in Kentville, NS"  we had a really great team and we could have won it, unfortunately finishing 4-0 in the round robin ultimately ended up with the team short of pitching and lost in the Bronze Medal game and came home empty handed. "I know any success I had in baseball came from hard work and going to camp to get the extra work I needed to reach the level I did" says coach Hornibrook.  "Camp this year, will be extra special as we are going to have two former major league players, Jesse Barfield and Jason Dickson, as well as my brother Dwight, who is really a great coach and pushes kids to perform beyond where they think they can play".  Also back is Bill Swanson (Swany) who has played an extremely important role in helping get the very first Royals baseball camp off the ground.  "Bill and Jayne (Swanson) came to Fredericton the first year of camp and all I can tell you is we owe a lot to this couple.  Bill knows how to coach kids and does an incredible job with his involvement with Little League International Camps in Williamsport, PA."Players who sign up for this camp will be expected to hustle and really desire to improve their game.
