Bill Swanson from Little League Camps in Williamsport, PA to be guest coach

Baseball camp only months away, which is slated for the last week of June 2011.  Director at large, Paul Hornibrook, has confirmed the attendance of Coach Bill Swanson, Assistant Director, from the Little League Baseball Camps in Williamsport, PA to help lead the coaching staff at the Fredericton camp.

Coach Swanson has been involved with College baseball for several years and was the Cleveland Indians AAA farm team Buffalo Bison's batting practice coach for several years before joining the Little League program in Williamsport the home of the annual Little League World Series.  The camp will be for ages 8 -14 and will run daily from 8:30 to 4:30.  Registration for the camp is still on going and is available on-line or through the mail.

Baseball Camp Guest Coach Bill Swanson Loves Getting Hit

swanson_01 As any good batting practice pitcher knows, especially in the professional ranks, your job is throwing strikes and getting players to hit the ball all over the field.  Coach Swanson during his time as batting practice pitcher with the Cleveland Indians AAA farm team Buffalo Bison’s was all about getting hit.  swanson 02

Guys like John MacDonald, who now plays with the Toronto Blue Jays, was one of those players Swany enjoyed throwing  BP (batting practice) to.  “John was one of those guys you wouldn’t mind dating your daughter, just a real nice guy and a hard worker” said coach Swanson.  “It’s all about the players getting good pitches to hit and getting comfortable and confident at the plate prior to the game.”  As part of this year’s baseball camp schedule, coach Swanson will join up in full uniform with the Fredericton Senior Royals on June 29th and pitch batting practice prior to the game vs the Moncton Mets.  Jody Peterson says, “it will be awesome”, in reference to having a professional batting practice pitcher stand in to throw BP.  Should be a great night of ball.

camp_jason_dicksonFORMER MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER JASON DICKSON ADDED AS GUEST COACH AT CAMP

We've all heard the name Matt Stairs,  and many would remember Rheal Cormier, both from New Brunswick, and had wonderful major league baseball careers.  In fact, Stairs is looking to extend his career by another year signing a minor league deal that at age 43 could see him playing this season with the Washington Nationls.  However, when it comes to major league success, New Brunswick's Jason Dickson climbed to the top in a hurry.  Jason pitched in the major leagues for the first time in 1996 against the New York Yankees as a member of the Anaheim Angels and spent 4 years at the major league level ending up with arm problems that cut short his career.  In all, Jason had a winning record of 26 wins and 25 losses with a 4.00ERA, not bad for a kid from the great baseball town of Miramichi.   In 1997 Jason was on top of his game beginning the season with a 6-0 record and was named to the 1997 Major League Allstar game.   Although he did not pitch in that game, many New Brunswickers were indeed made proud by a young man who pursued his dream and made it.  FMBA is indeed proud to have Jason accept an invitation to join us for a day and provide fundamental pitching instruction to all of the campers at this years camp.  Jason currently is vice-president of Baseball Canada and CEO at the Mill Cove nursing home 40 minutes outside of Fredericton.
